Creativity workshop – How do I tell a story?

What makes dance the unique form of art that it is and not just a series of movements? One thing more than anything else – telling a story.
When we create, how do we tell this story through our dance? How do we tell it without using words?
What character do I choose to be and how can a character help me tell my story? Or what happens when the character starts to tell a story of its own?

“Dreams I have Dreamt in the Studio” is a solo piece, that tells something using different characters, different emotions.
Learning some combintaions from the piece would be a place for us to start, and we will take it from there into trying different things that will help us find our creating characters, using movement, emotion, story and music.
We will spend our time together trying to find our own voice within the creation and our creativity.

About Tal Garmiza
Tal is an Israeli dancer currently based in Tel Aviv. She created and produced a project called “A Door to a Room” that brings dancers and musicians together. The project believes in taking the dance and the music into the world because everyone is entitled to it. Among other things, they created a show that explored the meaning of a place and how to create within it.
Today Tal is working on a solo piece called “Dreams I have Dreamt in the Studio” to the music of Roee Ben Binyamin and Itay Ashkenazy. The piece explores the connection between women, music and nature. She also works on and a short duet called “Desert”.
Tal will take part and present her work in Residencies in Dance City, Newcastle, UK (Creative Summer) and in CLOUD in The Hague, NL, this coming summer.
Tal is also involved in building a new center for dancers at the Arab-Jewish community center in Jaffa.

We are happy to announce the second European tour of Natsu Nakajima in Berlin, the Hague, and Barcelona. Natsu Nakajima (1943 Sakhalin, Japan) is one of the founding members of Butoh movement in Tokyo since the 1960s, and is one of its foremost pioneers abroad.

Workshop description
Combining Hijikata’s choreographic methods with the improvisation intelligence taught by Kazuo Ohno, as well as the long choreographic and performance expertise of Nakajima herself, this workshop will prepare you for sensitive improvisation work, choreographic aptitude, and performance integrity.  Natsu Nakajima will teach not only the physical techniques, but also the background of Butoh conceptions and ideas. About Natsu Nakajima
Natsu Nakajima (b. 1943 Sakhalin, Japan) has been one of the most prominent figures in Butoh dance since its foundation in Tokyo in the 1960s, and one of its foremost pioneers abroad. Training under both Hijikata Tatsumi and Kazuo Ohno, Nakajima went on to establish her own dance company, Muteki-sha, in 1969, with whom she has been performing and choreographing internationally since the early 1980s. Her highly acclaimed performance of ‘Niwa’ at LIFT ‘83 (London) marked the beginning of this international touring career, and led to performances at festivals such as FIND (Montreal), the Nancy Festival, and the Sydney Biennale. In addition to her performance and choreographic work, Nakajima has over thirty years of experience as a teacher, and has been one of the forerunners of dance for the disabled in Japan.

Ankoku Butoh (暗黒舞踏) – dance of darkness 
Hijikata Tatsumi, who passed away in 1986, is the originator of Ankoku Butoh; and Ohno Kazuo (1906-2010), an extraordinary and rare dancer, was his great collaborator. Hijikata was like Picasso; every season, he would change the style of his works like a chameleon. This partly explains why each of his disciples developed very different working styles. Natsu Nakajima was among the founding members of the Ankoku Butoh movement and belongs to the first generation.

Ankoku Butoh is a movement in the performing arts that was born riding on the wave of counter-culture in post-war Japan in 1950-1960s. Now in Europe, and some other countries, the term “Ankoku” has been dropped from “Ankoku Butoh”, and the term “Butoh” has become more closely associated with these countries. Losing “ankoku” has resulted in losing sight of the original ideology from when Ankoku Butoh was created and has given rise to many misunderstandings and misinterpretations.

Whatever you may call it, darkness, spirituality, or even something formless, something that cannot be put into words, or simply, the unconscious, the inexplicable, the destroyed and disappeared… …we are actually talking about something that cannot be seen. Something that Hijikata called “ankoku”. Hijikata liked to use the word “yami” (shadowy darkness). It gives the feeling of something that is full of contradiction and irrationality, somewhere like the “chaos of eternal beginning”… To deconstruct Ankoku Butoh with “language” is moving further and further away from the joy of early Ankoku Butoh’s integral quest for “the body as the scene of fulfilled life”.

Music is movement of sound in space. The prime manner of communication, preceding verbal communication, is the movement of our bodies. Body and mind are two parts constructing a whole. The mind is usually assigned as the motor behind inner intention, which portrays one’s movement. Inner intention in daily life, specifically in this case – in music, sound (its composition, production and experience), can be reached directly through a physical and movement approach.

We will explore new way of approaching music and sound from movement perspectives: our movement and the sound’s movement. Without using common verbal musical vocabulary each can discover a rich palate of new possibilities for composition, sound production, practicing routines, ensemble work and communication with the audience.

The workshop introduces and explores with composers and musicians (of any genre, practice and level) methods for use of Laban Movement Analysis in composition and music. Alongside the theoretical knowledge, in order to explore direct relation to sound, practical exercises are applied, both with instrumentalists and musical materials of the participating composers.

This workshop focuses on the Efforts branch of LMA – Time, Flow, Space and Weight, and their combinations – States and Drives.

Under the name Egyptian dance, we mean the foundation movement that characterizes the rich classical and folk dance heritage of Egypt. The workshop is accompanied by a Classical Arab music ensemble.

The aim is to have an experience with the essence of the dance and music, an inner, meditative moment of joy and freedom. An experience with the richness and beauty of traditional dance both for Egyptian dancers and contemporary dancers.

After the success of the first Butoh workshop at CLOUD/Danslab,  lead by butoh master Natsu Nakajima, we organize the second butoh intensive week, now with 2nd generation butoh artist Yuko Kaseki.

About the workshop CHORE O’GRAFFITI
Dance is an odd job and graffiti is sprayed fast, erased and painted over and over in urban space. What is choreography? What is improvisation? What is life? Breaking the border of systems and accidents that feed each other to find their own way of creation. Take risk in the process for progress, to print on a new surface.

Participants are asked to bring their own theme for a performance, develop and demonstrate it. The intention of the workshop is to expose oneself to the possibilities and challenges of damage, and re-creation. Furthermore we will establish original movements through improvisation with image, gesture, space, and relationships and thus increase body awareness.

The physical training will be based on Noguchi gymnastics, elements of Tai-Chi, and Butoh methodology. We practice the whole body to make it permeable for the awakening and the deepening of our layers of sensitivity. We will attempt to explore how we associate the variations of our inner body in relation to the outer by listening honestly.

About Yuko Kaseki
Yuko Kaseki lives and works as a freelance dancer, choreographer and teacher in Berlin since 1995. She studied Butoh dance and Performing Art in HBK Braunschweig with Anzu Furukawa and danced in her company Dance Butter Tokio and Verwandlungsamt in 1989-2000.

Yuko Kaseki and Marc Ates founded the dance company cokaseki in 1995. She has been involved in various projects with musicians and visual artists.

Solo and ensemble performances, improvisations are performed throughout Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Canada, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Australia, Russia and the USA. These works are physical performance that incorporates Butoh, contemporary dance, object design, texts, and soundscapes. Yuko Kaseki performs and organizes improvisation series “AMMO-NITE GIG” (Vol.1 – 48 and on going) with international performers and musicians since 2004.

Collaboration with inkBoat (San Francisco) since 2001, CAVE (New York), Isak Immanuel/Tableau Stations(San Francisco), Theater Thikwa (Berlin), improvisation duo with Antonis Anissegos(Berlin) and others.

Waves and Undulations – Exploring the Spine

For her research at Cloud, Ilse van Haastrecht asked herself the question: can I actually feel my spine? Where can I touch it? What happens when I move and when I change levels? What is proprioception?  You are welcome to join Ilse in pursuing these questions.

During the Lab, participants will explore these issues through improvised assignments, with prepared material, to study anatomy and to see how we can apply this knowledge to the moving body.

This lab is part of Ilse’s trajectory as a candidate teacher of Axis Syllabus. She looks forward to exploring together with you and she is open to your input and feedback.

What is Axis Syllabus?

AS is an open resource pool for information and findings about the human body in locomotion. The Axis Syllabus Research Community (
www.axissyllabus.org) aims to compile knowledge and reference points to what it might mean to move in healthy and structurally supported ways. The information is constantly tested and updated through classroom and research experience.

The challenges, aims and contexts for the moving body keep changing, as different bodies, situations and individual needs are various. Looking into anatomy, applied physics and bio-mechanical functioning, serves as a frame to help finding best ways of educating ourselves into graceful movement.

Contemporary Cuban Dance Workshop by Faizah Grootens

Contemporary Cuban dance is big, rhythmical, powerful, flexible and full of passion. Undulating movements from Cuban folklore are combined with flow, grounding and conscious use of breath. This creates a Modern style in which Afro-Cuban hip and back movements are fused with flowing turns and powerful jumps.

The workshop by Faizah Grootens was on Sunday, 30th November, from 14:00-16:00.

Faizah studied at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, and went to Havana’s University of Arts to specialize in Cuban Contemporary dance. She also trained with the internationally renowned dance company “Havana Rakatan.” Faizah has worked as a dance teacher at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, the Arts and Entertainment College Amsterdam, University of the Arts in Havana, Cuba and various schools in the Netherlands and abroad. Faizah has performed as an actor and dancer in a variety of projects and companies including Laleget Danza (Mexico), ISADANZA (Cuba), Harlekijn Danstheater with Herman van Veen for “Man Go,” “Cremat,” and “Blackout.”

 

In the Contemporary Cuban dance workshop you will learn how to use your full range of motion while still remaining strong and in control of your body. You’ll feel the energy and dance with your whole body: Hips, butt, arms, back, head…. EVERYTHING MOVES!!
