RESIDENCY | RECONNECT | BODIES IN ACTION

11 – 15 April 2022

Open classes every morning 10:30 -11:15 AM

Showing Friday 15 April 19:30 – 21:30

Julian & Shira from Bodies In Action ~ enGendering Contemporary Dance from England will be starting a new Research in the Cloud studio.

We will look at what it is like to reconnect with something unfamiliar. This can be taken in an abstract or literal sense. It will be quite a personal residency, with opportunity to take things we are familiar with, throw them out the window, and discover new things both physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Some questions and ideas we have while playing with this new creation is:

  1. How do unfamiliar bodies become familiar once again? How does the familiarity change?
  2. Does the reconnection of something that seems distant automatically reconnect or not?
  3. How does one/something smell, look, feel different? Can this happen with both a person and materialistic thing ?
  4. How do we transform the act of “re-meeting” into something abstract and visual?
  5. How does the amount of time apart from someone/something affect the reconnection of this?

Through these questions and figuring out the answers, we will find ways to manifest the creative process through physical tasks in order to generate material. We will take inspiration from our own unique experience as well as gather other experiences from our individual selves to tackle the question of how we reconnect with estranged individuals.

At the CLOUD/Danslab residency, we will invite people to come and take class in the morning.

Depending on what the space allows for, we will either guide a meditation/pilates/movement class or if professional dancers would like, we will host a ballet for contemporary dancers; otherwise, we will do a combination of both.

if you want more information about the classes please contact Julian: bodiesinactiondance@gmail.com

We will host a showing at the end of the week

to gather the immediate community to see what we have been up to. After this showing, there will be a discussion based on what people saw.

3 CONTEMPORARY DANCE CLASSES | MAROULA ILIOPOULOU

Thursdays 23/1, 30/1, 6/2

18.15-19.45

Cloud at Danslab in The Hague ( www.cloudatdanslab.nl )

address: DCR – De Constant Rebecqueplein 20b, 2518 RA The HagueClass

Description :

In my classes, I like to facilitate a welcoming, energetic and encouraging environment for the participants.
The class begins with a playful warm-up to tune in with ourselves in space and connect with each other, preparing safely for dance practice. We will focus on floorwork technique through various exercises and dance phrases. There will be some exercises informed by Flying Low, a technique which was developed by David Zambrano. This technique focuses mainly on the dancer’s relationship with the ground, utilizing simple movement patterns, which explore cohesion and expansion and trains the body to move in and out of the floor efficiently with speed. Towards the end of the class, we are going to learn a longer dance sequence in which we will add more material each time.

Through this class, we train our body to become physically strong, alerted and agile. We become friends with the floor, learn to use our weight efficiently, play with different dynamics and work towards expanding our movement vocabulary. Nourishing our bodily awareness we move with a greater sense of our own bodies, the others, and space, but also with a greater pleasure for movement.

Are you looking for a course to develop your technical knowledge while you are having fun? Then this class is for you!

Expect to play, fall, spiral, roll, release, jump, connect, make contact, enjoy the pleasure of motion… Looking forward to meeting you on the dance floor!

“The Crawling Eye”|Raúl Saldarriaga

-ENGLISH-

The Crawling Eye by Raúl Saldarriaga. The workshop is open to everyone (no experience required) and is followed by an open jam* with live music. In this introduction-workshop, you will explore the body as a sensor capable of perceiving macro and micro gestures, transform this information in movement decisions. A sensitive state where we have the ability to observe another body in a non-everyday way,  as an infinite field of forms and possibilities. Each movement, each new space offers unique situations where we can explore different constructions, responses, and variations. The “error” is only a new possibility. The connection and disconnection also create a dynamic.  We will immerse ourselves in contact with the other body with the idea of the game and not the ritual.

Raúl Saldarriaga (Colombia, 1982) He is a relational choreographer and contact improvisation researcher. He is currently the artistic director of the “Casagrafias” creation festival and teacher of Contact Improvisation. The style he teaches comes from dance research called “Forced Displacement.” This technic style is based on the ability to find possibilities of movement in the anatomy and gestures of another body; taking the idea of improvisation to the limit; leaving behind the certainty of what is the final destination of a movement; using different muscle tones and interact with bone architecture to create an intuitive movement language. Raul has a background in BA Art pedagogy,  BA contemporary dance, MA interactive media and environments and MA choreography and community.  ____________________________

Countertechnique classes |EIlit Marom

Countertechnique Open Morning Class

Tuesday  Sep 24th 10:00 – 11:30 – First Class!  With Eilit Marom
From Oct 15th till Dec 17th  2019

a series of 10 weekly classes every Tuesday morning at Cloud

The Countertechnique® class is a contemporary dance technique class. It stretches, coordinates and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina and
really move. The class starts with a recurring set of exercises, allowing dancers to investigate the Countertechnique principles in detail. The second half of the class consists of changing components, working towards luscious movement combinations and jumping at the end. The Countertechnique class results in dancers using less energy, losing their fear of taking risks and gaining speed in changing direction.

Eilit Marom, originally from Israel is based both in Haifa, Israel, and The Hague, the Netherlands. She has studied Countertechnique since 2007 and had an internship as Anouk van Dijk’s assistant in 2009. She attended the Countertechnique Teacher Training program in 2012 and 2014, and has been teaching Countertechnique since 2012 around Europe and Israel.Along side teaching Eilit is a performer and choreographer in the filed of dance and performance, she is part of an international collective for the project (To) Come and See and collaborates on various creations with the visual artist Adam Nillissen. (www.eilitmarom.com)

“My main interest in moving is to find ways to connect and express ourselves through our bodies, I like to awaken the senses and the sensitivity to our environment through observing what is happening when we open a desire to move. Countertechnique empowered my dancing and gave my body more volume and presence, bringing the focus to the moment of action. By using the principles I could let go of my own judgment and rediscover my strength and joy of movement. It is a playful pathway where thoughts become experiences and my favorite way to start the day.”

Dance is an ever evolving organism. Within all disciplines it is apparent that over the years new styles emerge from older ones. One dance form in which this evolution is very clear is bellydance. Having its roots in the Middle East during the 17th and 18th centuries primarily in Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon. But it is believed to be much older. Throughout its history new styles of dance were born within the bellydance genre, for example one of the more recent being ATS (American Tribal Style Bellydance ) and Tribal Fusion Bellydance.

The latest edition in this evolution is the merging of Tribal Fusion Bellydance with Urban dance styles known as Urban Fusion Bellydance.

– An introductory course spread over five classes each delving into  combining bellydance with urban dance styles-

The classes will consist of beginner to intermediate bellydance techniques which will gradually level up during the course. On top of that we will layer on an urban dance form, by focusing on one discipline per class.

This course is for the belly dancer looking to add to their vocabulary or the mover/dancer looking for a new challenge.

Yin & Vinyasa Yoga by Arianna Berardi

In May & June 2018  every  Wednesday at 6 pm
Arianna Berardi will be teaching  Yin & Vinyasa Yoga !

Lab description:

In this Vinyasa & Yin lab we will explore two different worlds of yoga. Literally, Vinyasa means “to place something in a special way”. In a Vinyasa flow, which will be the style of half of the classes, we will coordinate breath and movement, moving into asanas (poses) in a flow-like way. In these classes, you will experience the dynamic and energetic nature of a Vinyasa flow, getting in touch with your body in a fun and challenging way. In the other half of the classes we will explore Yin yoga: a relatively recent style of yoga that combines knowledge from Traditional Chinese Medicine with the more traditional Indian asanas. During a yin yoga class, you will hold poses for 3 to 5 minutes, diving into a meditative state, letting go and releasing of any tension. By finding stillness in a pose for long, yin yoga aids the fluidity of our fascia, a deep sheet of connective tissue that surrounds our muscles and organs. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? The goal of this lab is to make yoga accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible, no matter the age, physical condition or level of acquaintance with yoga. Everyone can join and enjoy! The classes are based on free donations, which means “give what you like/ what you can”.

The lab will start on May 2 , classes will be every Wednesday at 6 pm. Doors open at 5.45 pm. In the first class, we will begin exploring Yin yoga. Bring your own mat if you have one, there will be four mats available in case they are needed. Comfortable clothes are advised, together with a warm sweater or jumper for the final phase of the yoga practice. I am really excited to embark on this journey, and looking forward to meeting plenty of curious and passionate yogis!

About Arianna:

“I discovered yoga five years ago, when I first moved to the Netherlands at the age of 18. For a good while, I found in yoga a great physical work out, and a way to put my busy mind on hold. It was only after a few years that I started experiencing a more meditative way of practicing yoga, slowly turning inward to get to know myself on different levels. I am currently following a Yoga Teacher Training, and if all goes well, I will be certified in a couple of months! And as you all can imagine, I am really excited to start practicing with teaching at Cloud. Besides my love for yoga, I am also very passionate about singing, expressive painting, art therapies, and some fields of Psychology. I am currently finishing a master in Child Psychology, and excited about exploring ways to combine art, yoga and children.”

Residency The whispering Game | Nina Orteu

 nina

Residency: 11/24 July 2016

Presentation: Saturday 23 July

Project sessions:

Participant 1: 13th July (morning)/ Participant 2: 15th July (morning)/ Participant 3 : 16th July (morning)/ Participant 4: 21st July (morning)/ Participant 5: 23rd July (morning)

Workshop:
12 July 11:30h
14 July 11:30h
19 July 11:30h
22 July 11:30h

About Nina Orteu

Nina Orteu is a Catalan artist who works between the Netherlands and Barcelona. She started developing her performance practice when she got involved with Corpologia, a performance art festival, and became a member of the group. Later on, she also iniciated her own performance art festival in the Netherlands, Vertigo, and combined it with a performance research group for women artists in Barcelona.

She uses her body as a tool to research. For Nina, performance is not the goal, it is just a medium to get answers. She started her research in performance as a way to communicate to others things that cannot be said, most of the times related to her personal family history and involving domestic violence as a core topic.

More recently, she has started to add the participation of other people in her performances. Her main interest at the moment consists on the other. She wants to be able to understand and embrace the other, but at the same time she wants her to be understood and embraced too.

Project: the whispering game
Family and relationships, are my main focus of interest. I position myself as a daughter and sometimes, as a mother. In my performances, I research this topic while performing with other people or inanimate things that play a symbolic role in my life. This allows me to investigate how human relations function, so I can find other ways of living and loving, that are different from what I learned during my childhood with an abusive father.

The project
Nina is looking for participants who would like to take part in her research during the residency period. The idea of the whispering game project is based on a childhood game with that same name. ‘One person whispers a message to another, which is passed on through a line of people until the last player announces the message to the entire group. Errors typically accumulate in the retellings, so the statement announced by the last player differs significantly, and often amusingly, from the one uttered by the first.’

As part of my work I am inviting 5 people to play that game with me. In this case, instead of words, we are going to use actions to pass it through the line of participants. I will be the initiator of the game proposing an action called “The Ceremony” where daily objects take part. This will be the trigger to develop more actions together.
Would you like to join me? or do you have any questions?

Workshop: The Female Archive
this workshop aims to introduce women performance artists, to understand their practices and relate them to the present and put their concepts on the table in order to develop work in relation to theirs.
1 class € 7
whole workshop € 25

Sessions:

12th July at 11:30h -> the female archive : Yoko Ono

yoko
Yoko Ono, probably better known as the one that separated The Beatles.
Her work as an artist is very diverse. Member of Fluxus, she developed work using imagination as a very important tool. During her hard childhood in Japan, she often found herself playing games where she imagined delicious meals to eat to distract from her starvation. This is what later on, will trigger her other works.
During the workshop, we will have several scripts she wrote to be performed and interpreted in different ways for us.

14th July at 11:30h -> the female archive: Ana Mendieta
ana
Ana Mendieta left Cuba when she was a child, during the “Peter Pan program”. She was brought to USA, leaving her family behind. In her work, she tries to reconnect to the land, the earth, and become one with it. She talks about her loss using her body and nature.
As an activity, Nina Orteu proposes to go to the beach and try to reenact or reinvent some of her pieces from the “Siluetas” series.

19th July at 11:30h -> the female archive: Rebecca Horn
rebecca
Rebecca Horn has started exploring the concept of equilibrium with her body, and later on in her work, using kinetic structures. However, not related to that, she made a very interesting piece where she cut her own hair with a pair of scissors in front of a camera. Based on that, we are going to investigate during the workshop the importance of hair and its symbolic value while combining it with some of her equilibrium actions.

22nd July at 11:30h -> the female archive: Carolee Schneemann
carolee
Carolee Scheemann is known for her discourses on the body, sexuality and gender. In her piece interior scroll, she ritualistically stood naked on a table, painted her body with mud until she slowly exracted a paper scroll from her vagina while reading from it. I propose for the workshop to think about our bodies, reconnect to them, reactivate the pelvis/genital area as a center of energy and creativity.

Residency | Marlieke Burghouts

2 – 8 May
Presentation 5 May 18:00 Facebook
Movement lab monday till thursday from 100:00 till 11:15 am

During the residency Marlieke Burghouts is going to deepen out the first stages of her research into the embodiment and staging of ‘willfulness’ and ‘willingness’.
(Sara Ahmed Willful subjects Duke Press 2014 )

This research is conducted in relation to the whole body, but in particularly in relation to the action of raising the arm and the diverse meanings and readings this gesture can have.

My interest lays in investigating how the individual body, in this case myself, experiences willingness and willfulness and how that influences the actions and shaping of the body. Where do my decisions spatially and physically bring me?

The work will be created in collaboration with sound artists Jeske de Blauw en Mark IJzerman.
About Marlieke Burghouts
Marlieke Burghouts is a dancer, choreographer and teacher active in the Netherlands. In 2014 she graduated from the MA Choreography of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK. There she developed a deep interest in researching how the body is being shaped within society. Specifically she researches how we make decisions, how the physical body is ‘inscribed’ and shaped and how our identity is formed through culture and societal structures.
Marlieke has taught modern classes in upstate New York, New york City, Rotterdam, the Hague and Delft and will continue to teach modern classes and improvisation workshops throughout the Netherland and Europe
